Court-Ordered Injunction Halts Fuelwood Permit Sales on Carson, Cibola, Gila, Lincoln, Santa Fe and Tonto National Forests

Under a recent court-ordered injunction, the five national forests in New Mexico and the Tonto National Forest in Arizona have suspended all permit sales for collecting fuelwood.

In addition to fuelwood permits, the six national forests have also suspended all timber management activities, including stewardship contracts, timber sales, thinning and prescribed burns, in order to comply with the ruling.

Burned Area Emergency Response Team Assesses Conditions After The Pine Lodge Fire

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team has completed an assessment of post-fire conditions after the Pine Lodge Fire which burned over 15,000 acres in the Capitan Mountains on the Smokey Bear Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest earlier this summer.  The team included BAER leads, soil scientists, a hydrologist and an engineer. The BAER program is a rapid assessment to identify and manage potential threats to safety, property, water quality, and natural and cultural resources after a wildfire.

US 82 Closed August 14 for Debris Removal

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) in coordination with the Lincoln National Forest Service will temporarily close U.S. 82 to remove remaining debris from a recent crash that occurred near the tunnel in Otero County.  The removal of the remaining wreckage, which is in the canyon off Highway 82, is expected to take place Wednesday, August 14, 2019.
