Pine Lodge Fire Update, June 23, 2019

A community meeting is planned for Monday, June 24th, 6:30 pm at the Capitan Traylor Gymnasium

Location: 5 miles NW of Arabella, NM Start date: Thursday, June 19, 2019 Cause: unknown, under investigation Size: 5,998 acres Resources: Approximately 294 Percent containment: 0% Vegetation: Timber (grass and understory), brush

On June 23, the Southwest Area Team Incident Management Team 5 assumed command of the Pine Lodge Fire from the Pecos Zone Type 3 Team.

Fire activity:  Last night the fire perimeter was mapped with the use of an infrared equipped aircraft, giving fire managers an accurate and updated acreage.  Fire growth within the wilderness area was minimal. The most active area on the fire was on the northwest flank near Copeland Canyon, which caused significant fire growth. Crews on the northwest and north flanks of the fire will be actively working to keep the fire south of State Road 246.  On the east side of the fire crews are continuing work to minimize impacts to the hunter cabins and Brill Ranch.

Safety: Due to increased fire personnel activity in the Capitan area, please use caution around the fire area.  Expect a high volume of vehicle traffic in and around Capitan.

Weather:  Today is expected to be cooler in the fire area than Saturday; hot and dry conditions will persist. Wind speeds will be lower and out of the west.  Red flag conditions are not expected.

Values:  Fire fighter and public safety are the highest priorities in managing the incident. The fire area includes multiple cabins/residences, communication structures, archeological and historical sites, and the unique wilderness characteristics of the Capitan Mountains Wilderness.

Road and Area Closures:  Highway 246 is closed from Capitan to Roswell.  Local residents will be allowed to access their home or property. An area closure is in place for Capitan Mountains east of Capitan Gap Road until further notice. All trail systems and Forest Service roads within the closure area are closed to public use. West Mountain is open for recreation. The official closure information and map is posted on the Pine Lodge Fire Inciweb page:
