Sacramento Ranger District – Spring update on recreation site availability

Alamogordo and Cloudcroft, NM – April 12, 2017 – The Sacramento Ranger District has opened most recreation sites for the 2017 season. All day-use sites are now open, including the following Forest Service-operated camping areas:  Upper Karr Campground, Lower Karr, Bluff Springs, and James Canyon campgrounds. Please be advised that there are no trash pickup services at our Forest Service maintained campgrounds, and a limited number of trash cans are available at Lower Karr/James Canyon. Visitors are encouraged to be good forest stewards. Please remove trash from campsites and ensure that campfires are never left unattended and completely extinguished before leaving the area. Lincoln National Forest’s Fire Danger transitions to HIGH

ALAMOGORDO, RUIDOSO, CLOUDCROFT, CARLSBAD, NM, April 6, 2017 – For Immediate Release.  With the increase in hotter temperatures and drying winds over the past few days, drier fuel moistures have escalated the potential for an increase unwanted wildland fire starts. Based on current weather and fuel conditions and the increase in public and recreational activities within the Forest during the upcoming weeks, the fire danger rating is transitioning to HIGH.  The Fire Danger Rating signs across the forest will read “HIGH” effective Friday, April 7th.  This HIGH fire danger rating extends across the entire forest, which includes Smokey Bear, Sacramento and Guadalupe Ranger Districts. Temporary Closure Order in effect on Sacramento Ranger District

ALAMOGORDO, CLOUDCROFT, NM, April 3, 2017 – For Immediate Release. The Lincoln National Forest has issued a closure order for resource protection and for the protection of public health and safety.

The closure order will include areas fenced off by temporary electric fences within Agua Chiquita, Rio Peñasco and Wills Canyon on the Lincoln National Forest. The closure is necessary to protect people from electric shock and to protect New Mexico meadow jumping mouse (endangered species) habitat. The closure will be in effect April 3, 2017 and shall remain in effect until November 15, 2017. The closure restricts all entry to the restricted area. No authorized roads or trails will be included in the closure. Continue reading

Prescribed fire activities to continue through January on Lincoln National Forest

LNFAlamogordo, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft, and Carlsbad, NM – December 14, 2016 – Fire officials on the Lincoln National Forest’s Smokey Bear and Sacramento Districts plan to continue to take advantage of favorable weather and burning conditions through the month of January.  No prescribed fire activities are planned on the Guadalupe District during this time.
