CLOUDCROFT and ALAMOGORDO, NM – January 4, 2018 – The Sacramento Ranger District is currently closing several recreation sites for the winter season. At this time, all fee campgrounds, Lower Karr Picnic Area and the Trestle Depot Recreation parking area are closed until April 2018. Hazard Tree Mitigation/Removal along Sunspot Highway

  • The Lincoln National Forest’s Sacramento Ranger District in partnership with NM Dept. of Transportation will be conducting a hazard tree mitigation project from Oct. 6th – 31st along the SUNSPOT HIGHWAY (NM State Hwy 6563), between Cloudcroft and Sunspot.
  • This project will allow for the removal of dead and dying trees which pose a threat to public safety.

Prescribed Fire Operations to resume on Sacramento Ranger District

ALAMOGORDO, CLOUDCROFT, NM – September 23, 2017 – Fire officials on the Lincoln National Forest’s Sacramento Ranger District are planning to resume prescribed fire operations on projects within the boundaries of the Sacramento Ranger District.  Ignitions will take place during optimum weather conditions, beginning in October 2017 and continuing through April 2018, as weather conditions permit. ALAMOGORDO, CLOUDCROFT, NM, September 20, 2017 – The Lincoln National Forest will host a National Public Lands Day event at Sleepy Grass Campground on September 30 from 9 am to 1 pm. This is a special day to celebrate something we all share – our public lands!  This is a volunteer-based event and participants can be involved in a project that will include:  installing tree shades over freshly planted trees (seedlings) and possibly working on improvements to the campground or adjacent area. Notification of Decision – Hornbuckle Salvage Project

ALAMOGORDO, CLOUDCROFT, NM, August 1, 2017 – The Sacramento Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest has completed the analysis and a decision has been reached for the Hornbuckle Salvage Project. The project area covers approximately 14 acres of National Forest System land within Hornbuckle Canyon in Otero County, New Mexico (Figure 1). The project area is approximately 0.6 miles west of the Sacramento River Road, directly on the south side of Forest Road 90 (Westside Rd.) and is located in Township 18 South, Range 11 East, Section 25; and Township 18 South, Range 12 East, Section 30.
