Burned Area Emergency Response Team Assesses Conditions After The Pine Lodge Fire

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team has completed an assessment of post-fire conditions after the Pine Lodge Fire which burned over 15,000 acres in the Capitan Mountains on the Smokey Bear Ranger District of the Lincoln National Forest earlier this summer.  The team included BAER leads, soil scientists, a hydrologist and an engineer. The BAER program is a rapid assessment to identify and manage potential threats to safety, property, water quality, and natural and cultural resources after a wildfire.

US 82 Closed August 14 for Debris Removal

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) in coordination with the Lincoln National Forest Service will temporarily close U.S. 82 to remove remaining debris from a recent crash that occurred near the tunnel in Otero County.  The removal of the remaining wreckage, which is in the canyon off Highway 82, is expected to take place Wednesday, August 14, 2019.

Location: 5 miles NW of Arabela, NM     Cause: Unknown Under Investigation  Start date: Thursday, June 19, 2019    Vegetation: Timber (grass and understory), brush   Resources: Approximately 566     Percent Contained: 11%     Acres: 12,484         

A community meeting will be held tonight, at the Arabela Fire Station at 6:30 P.M. to provide an update on the Pine Lodge fire for residents from that area.
