The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) in coordination with the Lincoln National Forest Service will temporarily close U.S. 82 to remove remaining debris from a recent crash that occurred near the tunnel in Otero County. The removal of the remaining wreckage, which is in the canyon off Highway 82, is expected to take place Wednesday, August 14, 2019.
Work to remove the debris includes mobilization of equipment, removal of debris, and traffic control. All closures in effect will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Motorists are asked to seek alternate route while work is taking place.
Removing the wreckage will ensure no unwanted materials enter the nearby waterways and it will maintain the scenic nature of the area. The Tunnel Vista Observation Area, which has been closed since the accident, will be reopened as soon as the final wreckage material has been removed.
