The Lincoln National Forest invites the public to comment on our Draft Wilderness Inventory Criteria and Draft Wilderness Evaluation Criteria. The documents can be downloaded from the Lincoln National Forest website at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/lincoln/landmanagement/planning/?cid=FSEPRD639956.
These documents are part of the larger Forest Plan Revision effort. Each national forest undertaking Forest Plan Revision must complete a process of identifying and evaluating lands that may be suitable for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System, and determine whether to recommend any lands for wilderness designation. The Draft Wilderness Inventory Criteria and Draft Wilderness Evaluation Criteria are the first steps in this process.
The Draft Wilderness Inventory Criteria looks at noticeable man-made features on the landscape to determine which National Forest System lands may be suitable for wilderness designation. The Draft Wilderness Evaluation Criteria is a forest-focused outline of the criteria we may use to evaluate wilderness going forward.
We would love to hear your thoughts and comments on these documents. Please submit your comments by July 31, 2019 in one of the following ways:

Eventually, the Forest Supervisor will decide which areas, if any, to recommend to Congress for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Only Congress may designate wilderness.
