Winter Recreation Update for Lincoln National Forest’s Sacramento Ranger District
CLOUDCROFT
Recreation opportunities are still available on the district, including Upper Karr Campground, James Canyon Campground, Sleepy Grass Picnic Area, and more (visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/lincoln/recreation for a list of sites). The Silver Ski Trails will be maintained once there is enough base snow to groom. At this time, trails are reported to be clear but snow cover is minimal. Again, depending on current weather conditions, snow play areas may be available at dispersed sites and Upper Karr Campground. Please contact the Sacramento Ranger District with any questions at (575) 682-2551.
During the winter months, there are several primary safety concerns that recreationists need to be prepared for. Weather conditions can change suddenly and forest visitors should check on weather and road conditions before venturing out. Also be advised that patches of ice and snow may be encountered throughout the district. Other hazards to be mindful of include: sudden drops in temperatures, windy or snowy conditions that may cause trees or limbs to fall and wet or icy roads.
For our outdoor enthusiasts, it’s important to note that while most district restrooms will remain open, waste removal services will be limited. Please do your best to plan accordingly!
