Temporary Closure Order in effect on Sacramento Ranger District

ALAMOGORDO, CLOUDCROFT, NM, April 3, 2017 – For Immediate Release. The Lincoln National Forest has issued a closure order for resource protection and for the protection of public health and safety.

The closure order will include areas fenced off by temporary electric fences within Agua Chiquita, Rio Peñasco and Wills Canyon on the Lincoln National Forest. The closure is necessary to protect people from electric shock and to protect New Mexico meadow jumping mouse (endangered species) habitat. The closure will be in effect April 3, 2017 and shall remain in effect until November 15, 2017. The closure restricts all entry to the restricted area. No authorized roads or trails will be included in the closure.

Exceptions to the closure include: persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission; any Federal, State or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force engaged in the performance of an official duty; grazing permit holders removing livestock; and hunters retrieving game animals.

For additional information about the closure on the Sacramento Ranger District, please call Ciara Cusack at 575-682-2551, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

I thought the forest belonged to citizens, not the jumping mouse. (Has anyone ever seen one?)
