FREE Archaeology Workshop for Educators to be held June 25-26

ALAMOGORDO, NM – June 18, 2013 – Teachers, youth group leaders, and home-school parents are invited to a Project Archaeology workshop on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 25 and 26 at the Lincoln National Forest Supervisor’s Office in Alamogordo.  This workshop will give educators the resources to use the exciting field of archaeology to bring history, art, language, mathematics, social studies, and scientific inquiry into the classroom, while meeting Common Core State Standards, as well as The Next Generation Science Standards.

  • Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter (grades 3-5)  (Note:  activities can be adapted for older students)
  • Intrigue of the Past: A Teacher’s Activity Guide (grades 4-7)

The two sessions mentioned above are formal curriculum tools that facilitate literacy and instruction across content areas while also promoting the development of critical thinking skills.  Lessons include problem solving, scientific inquiry, observation-inference, cooperative learning, and citizenship skills as students link peoples and cultures of the past and present.  This curriculum is uniquely designed to capture students’ imaginations!

Eric Blinman, Director of the NM Office of Archaeological Services, and Jane Childress from the Bureau of Land Management, will lead the workshop.  Both bring extensive archaeological experience and great enthusiasm for sharing archaeology with young people.  Following this workshop, Jane and Eric will be available to provide classroom assistance and additional training to workshop participants.
