ALAMOGORDO, NM – May 07, 2013 – Daniel Davidson, age 26, US Forest Service wildland firefighter on Engine 621 of the Sacramento Ranger District, passed away on Sunday afternoon. Davidson was working on a Forest Service project, with two other engine crew members near Mayhill, NM, when he suddenly collapsed. The crew members immediately attended to Davidson and began CPR. They continued CPR as the life flight helicopter mobilized to the scene. Shortly following their arrival, the helicopter’s emergency personnel determined that Davidson had passed away. He was then transported to Albuquerque, NM. The cause of death has not been determined. Read the remainder of this entry »

Notes from the Birdhouse – Myrtle May Long, Long Gone

Oh the memories, the memories.  Myrtle May homely and white… what a gal.  She was always there for me.  If ever I had a spontaneous thought, she was right there to encourage me to go for it.  She was more than willing to ride out the storms that came and went.  She was there when I would break out in uncontrollable laughter.  She was there for me to lean on, to cry on.  When I found myself missing my grands she took me to see them.  She took me to take care of my son while he was in cancer treatment.  She carried me to my dad’s funeral.  She absolutely loved to go camping.  She was hardy and robust; she could pull a hill that made most men shiver.  I loved Myrtle May. ALAMOGORDO, NM – May 2, 2013 – The Lincoln National Forest is planning to implement Stage I Fire Restrictions on the Smokey Bear and Sacramento Ranger Districts, effective May 4th, 2013, at 8:00 am.

STAGE I FIRE RESTRICTIONS include the following prohibitions:

  1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal grills, coal, wood or stove; except in Forest Service designated recreation sites and campgrounds where grills and fire rings are provided:

Follow Me to the Senior Center – Cool — Not Cool

Some time back in the dark ages, you know, the late 50s, there was an odd group of musicians called the Beatniks. They frequently used the expression, “Cool, Man.” Then it got shortened to just “Cool.” The Beatniks weren’t cool for very long, but it became cool to say, “Cool.” To say “Cool” stayed cool until the early 70s.
