Ski Run Road and Oak Grove Campground Open

Ruidoso, NM (August 27, 2012) – The Ski Run Road (NM 532) is now open for use up to mile marker 10.  Visitors will need to turn around at Windy Point Vista.  Oak Grove Campground is also open for camping, although the White Mountain Wilderness Area remains closed and there is no public access to Ski Apache due to the Little Bear Fire.

Burned trees adjacent to the Ski Run Road were a falling hazard, causing the road to remain closed since June.  After several weeks of cutting those trees, the Ski Run Road and Oak Grove Campground are now safe for visitors.  From Windy Point to Ski Apache, the Ski Run Road remains closed.

“With hard work and dedication from all of our partners, including the Department of Transportation, contractors, and Lincoln County, we are pleased to be able to reopen the Ski Run Road to our visitors,” says Christina Thompson, Acting District Ranger for the Smokey Bear Ranger District. “Much of the Little Bear Fire area has been seeded and mulched.  Although many areas are greening up, please continue to be mindful of the risk of flooding in the vicinity of the Little Bear Fire.”

Access to the White Mountain Wilderness remains limited while Forest Service officials evaluate the safety issues in the area.
