Prescribed Pile Burns on Sacramento Ranger District

Alamogordo, NM (December 2, 2011) – During the week of December 4th, Sacramento Ranger District fire officials plan to prescribe burn the Sawmill slash piles near Sunspot Highway.  Included in this prescribed burn are some administrative piles near the Ranger District office and fire shop in Cloudcroft.

These piles are from logging activity and will be burned due the recent moisture received in the area and the forecast for some continued moisture which provides desired conditions to target these areas and reduce the activity generated slash piles.  District fire officials and personnel will continue to prescribe burn these areas through the month of December as conditions allow.  The total treatment area will consist of about 270 acres.  The completion of these prescribed burns will not only reduce fuels but will also promote overall forest health.

Smoke will be visible from Cloudcroft, High Rolls, Lost Lodge, and along the Sunspot and 130 Highways.  District personnel will post signs in the project area when implementing the prescribed burns.  Smoke, may be also present along roads and neighborhoods in the evening and early morning as cold air tends to push smoke down drainages.  Both smoke and fire activity will be monitored by fire officials.  Smoke may be visible for several days during and after ignition operations.  As always, firefighter and public safety are the top priority.
