Sombrero Prescribed Burn Notice

SACRAMENTO RANGER DISTRICT TO CONDUCT PRESCRIBED BURN NEAR COMMUNITY OF TIMBERON, NM
Update – Fire officials on the Sacramento Ranger District will continue the Sombrero prescribed burn near the community of Timberon, New Mexico the remainder of this week (November 9th through the 11th), weather conditions permitting. Fire officials accomplished 340 acres last week, and will prescribe burn the remaining 800 acres this week. The objectives of the project are to reduce hazardous fuel loading, to move the area towards a more fire adapted ecosystem, and wildlife habitat improvement. Alamogordo, NM (October 28, 2011) – Fire officials on the Sacramento Ranger District are planning to conduct the Sombrero prescribed burn on 1,140 acres near the community of Timberon, New Mexico the week of October 31st, weather conditions permitting.  The objectives of the project are to reduce hazardous fuel loading, to move the area towards a more fire adapted ecosystem, and wildlife habitat improvement.

Residents of local communities near Timberon, as well as public in the area may see and smell smoke for several days during and after ignition operations.  In particular motorists on Highways 34, 54, 506, or areas south of the Community of Timberon may see smoke.  When burning begins, signs will be posted along highways affected by the smoke and motorists are urged to use caution.

Forest personnel will post current information regarding the progress of the burn for communities and residents in the area.  Both smoke and fire activity will be monitored by fire officials.  Fire officials will also work closely with the local Volunteer Fire Departments.  As always, firefighter and public safety are the top priority.
