Prescribed Burn Notice

Alamogordo, NM (October 20, 2011) – Fire officials on the Sacramento Ranger District are planning to conduct a prescribed burn south of High Rolls, New Mexico along West Side Rd. in the Pig Canyon area.  Weather conditions permitting, District crews will prescribe burn approximately 690 acres the week of October 24th.

To move the area towards a more fire adapted ecosystem, project objectives are to reduce fire hazard by reducing the surface fuel loading generated by wildlife opening mechanical treatments previously completed in this area.

Communities that may be impacted by smoke include High Rolls and Mountain Park along with housing developments in the Haynes Canyon and Karr Canyon areas.  The communities of Alamogordo, Sunspot, Cloudcroft, High Rolls, and Mountain Park may see and smell smoke along with motorists on Highway 82.

When burning begins, signs will be posted along Highway 82 and in areas where smoke will be highly visible.  Motorists are urged to use caution.  Forest personnel will post current information regarding the progress of the burn for communities and residents in the area.  Both smoke and fire activity will be monitored by fire officials.  As always, firefighter and public safety are the top priority.
