Oliver Lee State Park Open House

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – Fall is in the air, the leaves are beginning to change color, the air is cooler, and it is the perfect time to visit Oliver Lee Memorial State Park. The park has a variety of program events coming up, including an Open House on October 8, 2011, where the day-use fee will be waived.
“Autumn is a great time of year at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park,” said Wendy Justice, Park Manager. “We have beautiful scenery, great trails and amazing views.”

Scheduled October events at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park are as follows:

October 1, 2011: Trail Journaling, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Meet at Visitor Center
Walk through the park and learn about the Chihuahuan Desert habitat. Participants will be encouraged to keep a journal and do several activities while on the walk. This is a fun way to closely observe nature and find a personal relationship with the world around us. Journals and materials will be provided. Day-use fee required.

October 8, 2011: Open House, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Come discover the natural, cultural and historical resources of the park at our annual Open House. The natural resources of Dog Canyon have enabled human occupation for 10,000 years. Day-use fees are waived for these events:

  • The Water Trail Walk, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Meet at Visitor Center
While walking the Riparian Nature Trail enjoy the scenic beauty and learn about the water resource at Dog Canyon that has enabled people to live here for 10,000 years. Learn how native cultures and early settlers used the resources of the canyon.
  • Oliver Lee Ranch Open House, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Lee Ranch House
The Oliver Lee Ranch House will be open for extended hours. The ranger staff will be available to facilitate your self-guided tour of the Oliver Lee Ranch House, which was originally built in 1893. Today, the reconstructed home of the Lee family houses period furnishings and displays that provide a window into the history of early ranching in the Tularosa Basin.

October 15, 2011: Watercolors and Landscapes, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Group Shelter
Try your hand painting en plein air or outdoors. If you enjoy painting or just want to give it a try,

October 22, 2011: Jupiter Rising, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Group Shelter
